18.5 miles today (in before wind storm).  I don’t really have too much going on, just midterms taking over my whole life at the moment.  So I have decided to take a stab at reviewing these tasty gummies.

I tried out these Clif Block Shots.  I have also test tested other gels like the Strawberry-Banana Powerbar.  Way to sweet for me.  Plus I cant run with a bottled water.  The way I let my hands “hang” like they’re holding potato chips wont hold a bottle water.  I’ve dropped my ipod so many times because I don’t like to grip things running.  I find that it makes my arms stiff and I exert too much energy that I could use in my legs.

This is what I tried, Black Cherry Flavored.

After the first 6 miles I popped one in and tried to chew it.  It was kind of too big.  Small people have small mouths lol.  At 6.5 miles I popped another one in and chewed part of it and almost choked, so I decided to just stick it in my cheek and see if it dissolves in my mouth.  That worked.  At mile 12 I popped one more in my mouth, stuck it in my cheek and let it dissolve.  Mile 15 I popped my last one in and let that dissolve.  I’m pretty sure you don’t HAVE to chew these. I chew gum when I run, but this does not have the same consistency as gum and I ended up drooling a bit trying it the second time and pretending it was gum.  I also loved the fact that it had 2 servings of 100 calories and that I could space out my consumption.  Also holding it was real nice, its lightweight and like a stick.  I am pretty sure i can stuff a few in my sports bra haha.  Getting them open was a pain, I had to use my teeth (yeowch).

How I felt during the run, like I can conquer the world.  One block has 33 calories and a little kick of caffeine.

After the run I did some stretches for the hamstrings and the hip flexors (I have a history of tendonitis in the IT band).  I also rolled my foot out with a frozen piece of Jimmy Deans Sausage (I recommend this over a frozen water bottle) as I also have Planters Faciitis.  I got that in October and got it under control and it’s been acting up since I got tripped at my last race.  I also did a 20 minute session of runners yoga from Yogadownload.com *ahem*theyhavefreestuff*ahem*

I also got extremely nauseated after I ate (1 1/2 hours after I completed my run).  I am pretty sure that waiting 90 minutes to eat after a run like that was a dumb idea (after doing some googling).  It really didnt hit me until 4 pm.  I was half passed out for 2 hours.  Finally ate dinner, which wasn’t much.  Got hungry after 2 hours so ate a little bit more (my watch said I burned 1700 calories…like I don’t think I will be able to make that up in one day lol).  Half hour later I was doubled over with my face in the toilet.  Needless to say the nausea went away for the most part.

I don’t know if it was the shot bloks, or if it was waiting that long before eating (I do this a lot because of scheduling), or if it was from the fact that I kinda went fast (but I felt fine and I was on a flat surface so I assumed my faster pace was a result), or it could be that my blood pressure was extremely low (I have had problems with this in the past).

Question to all those who read my posts or stumble upon it:  Have you ever gotten sick from your long runs?  Have you found a cure to this?  I am open to any suggestions.

I made raisins out of the epically large fruit tray I got from Thursday.  I had too many grapes to let go to waste (plus they were extremely ripe and plump!)…so I dehydrated them with a dehydrator.  Honestly I don’t think I can think about sitting around an oven dehydrating grapes for 24 hours while my house gets super hot and the electric bill goes up lol (wait I’m not paying for that haha).

Homemade raisins taste so much better than store bought, or I have acquired taste for more natural sweetness lol.  I still had a lot of raisins, and flour, and well…I love english muffins…so that’s what I did.

I go the main recipe from this site.  But there are several ways to make them, I just had those ingredients on hand.  I was lucky to even have JUST ENOUGH flour for the recipe lol.

I am pretty sure half my yeast died…or I used lactaid instead of regular milk, it didn’t raise as much as I was expecting it to.  I sprinkled Cinnamon on the top since I didn’t have cornmeal.

They were easy to put on the griddle, here’s a tip if you have sticky dough: olive oil. I dipped my finger in it and spread it to the rest of my fingertips.  I didn’t have any more flour left to coat my hands in.

they look like pancakes 😀  Don’t be tempted to squash them down with your spatula!  I did that to a few of them and now they are super dense and thick.

Bake them in the oven to make sure they are cooked all the way through…also DO NOT SMASH WITH SPATULA! they will not bake properly!

They look so tasty…and too hot to eat….I swear this is not another pancake recipe…

I ended up with 12 small muffins.  The recipe says it makes 6 but I did 12 haha.  They tasted pretty good, not the like store bought ones like Thomas.

What I had for breakfast this morning:

  • 1 homemade English Muffin
  • 1 Tb of PB (this turned out to be too much pb for it haha)
  • 1 tsp? of Honey

RECIPE:

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour (All Purpose is what I used)
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 tsp instant yeast or active dry yeast
  • 1 Tbsp butter at room temp
  • 3/4 – 1 cup milk at room temp (I used Lactiad since milk bothers me )
  • 1/2 cup Raisins
  • Cinnamon
  • Olive Oil
Directions
NOTE:  If active dry yeast combine with 1/4 cup water at 100-110°F and add a bit of sugar.  Wait 10 minutes, it’ll foam. Then continue with the recipe.
  1.  Combine Flour, Sugar, Salt, Yeast, and Raisins (cinnamon is optional) and mix together.
  2. Add in 3/4 cups of Milk and Butter.  If dough is too dry add the rest of the milk.
  3. Put some olive oil on your hands (not a lot, this stuff spreads) Put dough on clean (preferably floured) surface.  Knead for 10 minutes…seriously, get into that kneading!
  4. Put dough back in bowl and loosely cover for an hour, let it raise.
  5. Separate the dough into 12 pieces…or 6 that’s up to you.  Place them on a lightly Pam sprayed pan. Sprinkle cinnamon ontop.  Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let it raise again for another hour.
  6. Heat up a skillet to medium heat and preheat oven to 350°…PAM YOUR SKILLET…or lightly oil.  Transfer dough balls onto skillet and cook each side once for 2-4 minutes…depending on how hot the skillet is.
  7. Transfer to baking tray, put in the oven for 5-8 minutes.  Don’t wait around for 1 muffin still on the skillet, it’ll have to wait til it is done.  Then throw it in the pan to bake! (this is crazy…but it works)
  8. Take out of the oven, place on cooling rack and let it cool for about 30 minutes.
  9. Eat them 😀

1 Muffin:    Calores:  105;  Carbs:  23.5g;   Fiber: 1.3g;  Protein: 3g

Seriously…it snowed last weekend and that was it for this month…so far, there’s still 10 days left!

Did my long run, and I will be thankful for painkillers and Dr. Scholl’s inserts for Planters Faciitis.  I got it back in October (due to the running schedule of high milage one week, low milage next week, high milage week followed by low milage week, ect.  Usually it’s 3 weeks increase milage and 1 week back off).  I’m pretty sure I have it back in my left foot, and now in my right (I am a dummy who tied their shoes on too tight.  Anyways, I guess when your watch reads 8min/mile for your long run instead of the usual 8:40 I guess that says something haha.

Recap on my budget challenge again…I used my credit card yesterday, but only for gas.  I planned on using whatever I had in my bank for gas anyways since I have cash floating around left and right, it’s an awesome day when you do laundry and a 10 dollar bill falls out of your pocket.

I also snagged a huge fruit tray for free on Thursday.  My friend and I went to see this guy from Business Week talk about how they design their magazines (British people, love your accent, hate trying to pick up on what you are saying).  I guess looking like a starving college student made 3 people walk up to us and ask us to take the trays since it was going to go to waste…um….SCORE!!! There’s a ton of grapes and I really want to try making raisins from my dad’s dehydrator and make english muffins (they’re so expensive to buy!)

I don’t have any recipes this time around…that deal with pancakes or breakfast foods…but…

So my last indoor track meet ever….yea.  Let me start off by saying that I was in the lead pack for the first 5-6 laps (I don’t recall what lap this happened on).  I got my back foot stepped on (this is common) and my leading leg kicked and next thing i knew i was on the ground on my back with one of my teammate’s spike almost going into my face.  Did I get up and finish? You bet I did!  I feel like I have bad season ending meets, I had 2 important family members pass away right before 2 of them, I threw up before last years indoor race, got food poisoning right before a back-to-back 10k and 5k, I had an injury with planters faciitis,  and I’m not going to go into the one I wasn’t allowed to go to.

Anywho, I signed up for the marathon yesterday…but yea I know you want pancakes? (I didn’t bring my camera with me!)

Peanut Butter Pancakes:

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup of fluffy pancake mix (I have the add water only one)
  • 1/2 mashed Banana
  • 1 chopped Strawberry
  • 1Tbs of Peanut Butter (I would use creamy, I had crunchy)
  • Vanilla Extract
  • 1tsp Brown Sugar

Directions:

  1. Prepare pancake mix with correct water:mix ratio
  2. Cut up banana into slices and add into mix, mix them together (the banana will mash when you mix)
  3. Add 1 tsp of Brown sugar and a small bit of Vanilla Extract
  4. Add 1-2 tsp of water at a time so the mix isn’t super thick
  5. Pour pancake into pan and drop the strawberries on top.
  6. Cook according to pancake mix directions. (make sure you get both sides at least once)
  7. Spread peanut butter on top when almost finished and let it melt
  8. Remove from pan, cool down, enjoy!

 

I am curious…What do you like on your pancakes?

I feel like I need to update before the weekend…not too much has happened except for dread on what the next week will bring me. (and no I am not talking about Valentine’s day)

I am talking about being a student athlete.

Some of you may be aware that I compete for Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor track.  Many of you may not know that our schedules for competition are “lighter” than in highschool.  We compete on the weekends.  Cross country is usually half a day or overnight.  Track is either all day or 3 days (this includes the travel time).

What I am getting at is this:  it’s very frustrating to balance homework, life, track, getting money (as in a job haha), working on my future career after I graduate.  I am working towards a BA in Graphic and Web design, I need my computer to do my work not a book to dig my nose into and memorize words that I will possible forget in a year.  I am also not the only one on my team with this double BA major, the other girl also feels the same way.

What other people don’t realize is that we are creative people who have creative projects.  It takes time and effort and dedication to put good work out there.  I have seen kids in my class that half-assed their work just to satisfy a professor.

 

Seriously sometimes I wonder if my mind is constantly on some sort of high (runners high!!!)

Back to my challenges:

Smiling seems to have helped in many ways.  Like when a printer randomly decides it doesnt want to print because it thinks it has no paper….force a smile, stare at a wall, and instantly you wont feel like throwing the printer out a window.

As far as budgeting….well my recent paycheck from work study was less than I thought I was going to get. I was going to use that money to sign up for a marathon (well I still am, the deadline for cheap registration ends the 15th). So I can’t use my credit card for a month.  So here’s to 30 days of not using a credit card…starting…now.

So, yea I kind of applied this kind of didn’t.  I had a crappy past few days.

I went home this weekend, so cookies galore haha

 

These are gluten free chocolate caramel cookies.  I was skeptical at first, but they’re SOOOO GOOOOD!  They’re from Mi-Del, they are made from gluten-free flour and contain no trans fat or artificial flavoring. I checked out Fooducate (free app!) to see what they say..yea there’s artificial flavoring in there, I knew it was too good to pass up 😛

I also had a conversation with my dad, about graduation and Outdoor track conferences being that same weekend.  Obviously I am graduating, obviously I am walking, I already paid the fee to show up (Do other schools do this???).  So on top of that, the following day is the Pittsburgh Marathon.  I havn’t signed up for it yet, I plan to, and I get paid this week from my work study (mmm budget challenge out the window).

I also tried Ba Ghanouj this past weekend.  It’s hummus, but instead of chickpeas it is made with eggplant.  My other half and I went to this Mediterranean restaurant called BaBa D’s.  I’m not sure if they cut their own french fries, but they were the best I’ve ever had anywhere.  Not soggy or super stiff or too salty.  On the plus side, it was cheap, like cheaper than Panera bread or Subway cheap and a huge portion size.

I guess for the smile challenge, I actually did smile more.  At least reflecting on it I think I did haha.  When you smile more, things seem to automatically be better.  Your perspective in life changes from “Doh, I can’t do anything today BLAAHH” to “I feel like superwoman and I’m gonna tackle the world!”

I can’t spell February right.

Budget challenge was kind of tough, but at the same time it wasn’t.  I mean I didn’t go super strict on the rules or anything either.  Just enough to keep me from impulsively buying stuff….Like a hamster…

I was also thinking about my next challenge, and that is something I want to put towards my career.  Become more knowledgable in interactive media.  I picked that up last semester with Adobe Flash (and later found out that flash will eventually be obsolete and replaced with jQuery or something).

So I guess my next challenge will be to learn/build my portfolio.  I seem to have let that go due to classes and track and I personally feel pretty far behind.  But then I think about people who have started late and people who have started early and then I’m like…well if I’m worried about age being a factor it’s only a number so who cares?  It’s about experience and getting my butt out of the shy corner and into the world.

I’m still going to continue with the budget challenge, I’m just going to slowly add things to it…until I implode.

Hopefully the link works haha.  This is my 3rd account on DA, the interactive flash part is not where I want it yet.  I am still working on it.

Anywho Ive decided that my next challenge is to smile more, say hi to everyone, go to more events(ok this one may be a bit of a problem considering my finance issue and time constraints) even if it feels awkward.

I have no idea what day…but  I do know that I started on the 9th so this makes day 22.  This weekend I spent….$1 on water.  The $5 I got from friday went towards…egg whites to add to my egg and frozen blueberries(darn those blueberry pancakes).  I didn’t even buy gas, my friend was generous enough to put a few bucks in my tank since she needed a ride.

Out of my meal plan money, I spent money on the cheapest stuff there, eggs, soy milk, peppers (a lot of people don’t know you can buy these), apples and bananas, yogurt, tons of cottage cheese.

I also got my Canon battery back 🙂  Omnomnomn. An egg, 1 part egg white, some red peppers, salsa, a lil’ bit of cheese:

I love how the colors pop out with my canon, it’s seriously making me hungry….oh and so is this apple cinnamon oatmeal with blueberries…and some guy fishing for oats:

Tomorrow is Feb 1st…I was debating on if I want to start a new challenge or not. (I’m definitely doing a reflection on this budget challenge tomorrow.)
